Can you believe Spring Break is right around the corner?! Soon enough, temperatures will be rising, and summer will finally be upon us to most people’s delight! Along with summertime comes bikini bods, beach parties, and the most damaging extrinsic factor for your skin: sun! You may want to tan and achieve the ultimate glow with the help of the sun, but let me tell you something: future you will not benefit in the slightest!
Sun damage is the worst type of skin damage, and this can ultimately cause a number of major issues with your skin in the long run. Even just a few decades ago, knowledge of sun damage wasn’t as accessible to everyone as it is now. People just didn’t know that laying out all day under the sun wasn’t just giving you glowy, bronzed skin. It was actually hurting your skin, drying you out, and even damaging your collagen. As those from this time have aged, they have seen the damage come through with leathery skin and dark spots all over. What we know now is that UV exposure is the reason for the majority of skin aging. What they may have done differently had they only known this back then!
This is why sunblock is SO important. I don’t care who you are or what you do. If there is only one skincare product you use a day, I would recommend it absolutely be a high-quality protectant of sun damage. How do you know what a high-quality sunscreen is? Here are a few pointers:
Look for broad-spectrum. Broad-spectrum means that the product will protect you against both UVA and UVB rays. These sunscreens usually contain both chemical and physical sunscreen ingredients.
Lotions are better than sprays. Trust me, I loved using sprays because they are incredibly convenient and much faster. However, the payoff is not all that. It’s easier to tell if you got all the necessary places with a lotion than a spray especially when applying outside. Sprays can get pretty dangerous if the wind’s blowing or if you’re applying to the face. Sprays can also be somewhat dangerous if you breathe them in.
SPF is still important. For years now, it’s been said the higher the SPF, the better. Then, there were dermatologists that said once it hits a certain SPF, there’s no need to go higher. So, which is it? SPF is important because it determines how long the sunscreen will work before needing to apply. Turns out, a lot of sunscreen doesn’t even work that long. Ultimately, here’s the guide:
SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
SPF 30 blocks 97%of UVB rays
SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays
The difference between 30 and 50 is about 1 percent. So, anywhere in between there will do the job as long as you remember to apply it multiple times depending on how long you plan to be outside. I personally have tried probably close to hundreds of different sunscreens throughout the years because my ability to handle the sun is pretty close to non-existent. Below are the top five that I have found to work consistently over the years and to provide the most protection.
Shiseido always had products that not only work incredibly, but they are reasonably priced for a high quality, luxury brand. This sunscreen is light weight and fluid, so it soaks into the skin quickly and deeply.
Invisiblur is incredible for the face as it’s more than just a sunscreen. It works as a sunscreen and a serum with tons of beneficial anti-aging ingredients, but it also works as a primer with a blurring effect that makes the skin look flawless.
Just like everything Tatcha creates, this sunscreen blends into the skin and gives it an incredibly, silky feel. The ingredients allow for assistance with anti-aging similar to the Invisiblur, and the finish is a soft and matte.
If you’re looking to add some color with your sunscreen, this one provides a nice light coverage while offering all the benefits of a broad spectrum protectant. It gives a natural radiance, and it doesn’t look like you’re wearing anything at all!
The SuperGoop is a little bit of a thicker lotion, but it blends into the skin and works incredibly! For the price point, it’s great if you are looking for a little bit of a less expensive option as well. They have numerous products that all do justice in protecting the skin.
While there are plenty of great products, these are the ones that I have noticed an actual difference in when using. Leave a comment, and let me know if your favorite sunscreen made this list! Be sure to check out my Instagram for more daily content, @batsforbeauty!
